WHEELING — Julia Dunaway scored twice and Anna Brannare added a goal late as Wheeling Park’s girls’ soccer team started the 2024-25 campaign with a hard-fought, 3-3 draw with defending West Virginia Class AA/A state champion Charleston Catholic High School.
Four of the game’s six goals came in the final 13 minutes of play, leading to an action-packed finish on the new turf at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Dunaway, a junior forward, got the scoring started three minutes into the game, as she took a pass from senior defender Reese Moores and raced past the defenders before sliding the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
That held up until the 19 minute mark of the first half when Charleston Catholic tied the game on a cross.
The game remained locked at 1 until late in the second half.

Park goalkeeper Hailey Hastings made several key saves during that stretch including a double-fisted punch in the 21st minute of the second half that otherwise would have been an easy goal for the Irish.
Charleston Catholic did take the lead in the 28th minute when Molly Messer hit a strike from 25 yards out that sailed past Hastings’ outstretched arms.
But with the score 2-1 Charleston and only 12 minutes left in the game, Park went to work.
Just a few minutes after Messer’s goal, Dunaway took a pass from Wheeling Park senior Katelyn Smith, raced past the defense and planted the ball in the back of the net to knot the game at 2. Two minutes later, following a Charleston Catholic foul, Park senior Harper Moores took a free kick from midfield, sent it deep into the Charleston end where Brannare, also a senior, was able to get the ball from senior Caroline L’ecuyer and find the open net for a 3-2 Park lead.
That held up for three minutes until Irish forward Aurelia Kirby took a cross and found the back of the net to tie it at 3, which is where the game ended.
