Alexis Bordas, left, is presented a ball commemorating her as the all-time leading scorer at Wheeling Park High School, no matter what gender, by Dee Davis, who had held the record for 44 years. Bordas is a Duquesne University recruit.

WHEELING – Records are meant to be broken. Forty-four years after Dee Davis set the Wheeling Park school record for career points scored at 1,854, the Patriots’ Alexis Bordas recently surpassed that mark.

The sharp-shooting Bordas, eclipsed Davis’s mark in a 48-43 loss at Westerville South in suburban Columbus.

“It’s definitely a great accomplishment. I am very happy that I was able to achieve it,” Bordas said. “It was one of my individual goals coming into Wheeling Park High School. Even though I’m happy with the record, team goals always come first, so that’s what I’m focused on the most.”

The Patriots are 3-1 and host Morgantown tonight in a key W.Va. Class AAAA sectional preview.

Davis earned a scholarship to West Virginia University. Bordas is headed to Duquesne University.

“I wasn’t alive when she played, obviously, so I never got to watch her play, but I have heard how great of a player she was,” Bordas added. “She was here to present me with the basketball tonight (last week), and that meant so much to me. She also sent me a really nice message after I broke the record. That also meant a lot coming from a player like her. It shows how great of a person she is, also.”

“I can’t even put into words what she has meant to our program. She’s not just a scorer as you saw tonight,” Wheeling Park head coach Ryan Young said. “She does a lot of rebounding, handles the basketball a lot for us and that is just getting her ready for the next level.

“I can’t even imagine going back to when she came here as a freshman and all the accolades she’s received and done for this program during her four years.

“I think every coach wants to experience having a player like Alexis and teams like we’ve had the past few years. It’s truly been an experience I will never forget.”

Would Bordas have liked to have set the record during a home game inside the ‘Palace on the Hill?’

“Obviously, setting it (the record) at home in a win would have been fun, but either way, I was recognized tonight (last Wednesday) in front of the home fans.”
