High School Roundup: Union Local Win Streak Comes To Halt; Cameron Blasts CeeBees

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Fort Frye handed Union Local its first loss of the girls’ high school basketball season Wednesday night inside the refurbished ECO Center.

The Cadets (4-1) bolted to a 36-21 halftime advantage and cruised from there in a 49-35 victory over the Jets (5-1).

Laken Vinskovich paced Union Local with 15 points. Ella Pietranton added 10.

Fort Frye was paced by Emmie Duskey with 16.

Cameron 57, Clay-Battelle 31

BLACKSVILLE – The Dragons went on the road and picked up a convincing win over the CeeBees behind a big day from senior Maci Neely.

Neely scored 21 points, and tallied 18 in the first quarter, picking up a 3-pointer in the third quarter to get to 21. Cameron led 28-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Cameron had 10 players score on Wednesday, with Macey Bertram the second-highest total on the Dragons with seven. Three players scored for Clay-Battelle, led by Mackenzie Toothman with 12.

Cameron (1-1) will be back to work Thursday against Notre Dame in their home opener.

SWIMMING

EL Boys, Steubenville Girls Splash To Wins

STEUBENVILLE – The Potters went 4-0 in boys action, while Big Red did the same on the girls’ side inside the natatorium at Steubenville High School.

Boys

Weir, which finished 1-3, had the lone double individual winner in Rayn Owen who won the 200 IM and 500 Freestyle.

Oak Glen went 3-1, Steubenville 2-2 and Union Local 0-4.

Girls

Weir’s Catherine Glodowski swept the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle events, while teammate Lauren Bissett swam to victories in the 100 Breaststroke and 200 Freestyle.

The Red Riders were 3-1, East Liverpool 2-2 and Union Local 1-3.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Barnesville 62, River 56

BARNESVILLE – The Shamrocks trailed by 10 at the half but outscored the visiting Pilots 23-8 in the third quarter in rallying for the win.

Casey Carpenter netted seven of his team-high 21 points in the span, while Braedon Willis added six and Blake Burkhart five of his 15. Ryker Willis contributed 14.

River’s Peyton Blue poured in a game-best 29. He had seven triples, including four in the fourth quarter when he scored 13. Evan Longwell added 14.
