PREP ROUNDUP: Monroe Central Girls Suffer Road Defeat at Waterford

WATERFORD, Ohio — The Monroe Central Seminoles fell in a road outing against the Waterford Wildcats, 69-28.

Jadyn Miller was Monroe Central’s leading scorer with nine points. She also had four rebounds, tied for a team-high.

Brylee McFrederick followed with seven and Mayzie Emery had six.

Kendall Sury and Avery Wagner each had 16 to pace Waterford, who was playing in their season opener.

Monroe Central moves to 1-2 on the season with losses to Waterford and Federal Hocking, who won 24 and 17 games, respectively, last year. Sandwiched in-between those contests, the Seminoles defeated Shadyside.

Monroe Central next faces Barnesville at home Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Edison 59, Buckeye Local 31 (Late Friday)

CONNORVILLE — The Edison girls basketball settled in after trailing early and pulled away from Buckeye Local for a road victory Friday evening.

The game was the nightcap of the Panthers’ Kara Bright Classic, during which new bleachers donated by the Kara Bright Foundation were dedicated.

The host Panthers (0-3) rallied late in the first quarter to take a 10-8 lead after one, but it was all Edison (2-0) from there.

The Wildcats out-scored the hosts 13-2 in the second quarter to open a 21-12 lead at halftime, then put up 21 points in the third quarter to pull away for good on the way to victory.

Leading the way for coach Mark Smyth’s group were a trio in double digits — Sophia Henderson with 17 points, Abby Carpenter with 12 points and Abby Boka with 11 tallies.

Boka hit a pair of triples, while Henderson and Carpenter each knocked down one.

For the Panthers, Alyssa Daily had a big night in the loss with 18 points.

Edison also won the jayvee contest, 26-9.

The Wildcats visit Wellsville on Monday, while the Panthers are back at home for a rematch of their season opener hosting Catholic Central on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Bellaire defeated Buckeye Local in boys action also as part of the event, as the Big Reds pulled away for a 59-34 victory.

For Buckeye Local, who was opening its season, Haden Wilhelm led the way knocking down three triples and finishing with 12 points.

Bellaire was led by 26 points from Caleb Jewell, who knocked down six 3-pointers, while Rackwon Pettegrew finished with 18 points.

The Panthers go down Route 7 to River on Tuesday night.
