STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red faithful are getting quite used to hearing public address announcer Scott Lane say “for three” a lot so far this season. He uttered the phrase 13 times for the home team inside the Crimson Center on Tuesday night.
Tre’von Wiggins knocked down seven of those 13 and racked up a game-high 24 points, and five different players made a shot from beyond the arc as Steubenville handled visiting St. Thomas Aquinas 82-53 for its third-straight victory.
It is the second-straight game Big Red has scored 82 points and the third-straight game with 10 or more triples.
“It was nice to see,” Big Red head coach Mike Haney said of the triples. “The kids all played hard, it was a total team effort. We shared the ball a lot, it was just a great win.”
After some early back and forth, Big Red closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run to open an 18-8 lead. The advantage did not drop to single digits again until the late in the third quarter.
That run ultimately swelled to 16-2 early in the second quarter, and Big Red (3-1) continued to build onto the lead as Wiggins made three triples in the quarter and Davis sunk his second of the quarter at the buzzer for a 41-24 halftime lead.
Aquinas made a bit of a push in the second half of the third quarter, pulling within seven in the final minute of the frame before Wiggins hit a pair of late treys to push the margin back up to 13 after three.
Big Red led by as many as 31 in the fourth, subbing out for the last few minutes after Wiggins drained another long range bomb.
“That third quarter, we had a little lull there,” coach Haney said. “We had (a lead of) 18 or 19 there and let them get back to single digits, we gave up 22 points in the third quarter … our guys dug down after that. We held them to four points in the fourth until the last minute and were able to get that lead back up.
“We created a lot of turnovers and I think we took seven charges. That’s the most I can remember we’ve had since I’ve been coaching.”
In addition to Wiggins’ 24, Santino Haney tallied 13 points and dished nine assists and Davis tallied 13 points, had six assists and grabbed four rebounds. Will Taylor tallied 15 points with four assists and three boards as well, putting four Big Red players in double figures.
Despite STA having a size advantage, Big Red was only out-rebounded 22-19 and forced the Knights (1-3) into 27 turnovers, while giving it up just six times themselves.
“They’re very athletic and they’ve got some size on us, we’ve got to use to playing against size,” coach Haney said. “Everybody did something, it was a total team effort. Guys came off the bench and got big steals, JoJo Rea made a couple nice shots late, it was everyone.”
