Two More Added To Rodriguez’ WVU Coaching Staff

Two new assistant coaches were named to West Virginia University’s football staff Friday, and a Mountaineer legend will reportedly join the team in an analyst role.

WVU announced that William Green has been hired as the Mountaineers’ new defensive line coach, while Michael Nysewander has been hired as tight ends coach.

Green rejoins Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Zac Alley after spending time on their staffs at Jacksonville State and Louisiana Monroe.

“William has coached with us at Jacksonville State and Louisiana Monroe and has done an outstanding job developing players and defensive lines,” Rodriguez said. “I am confident that he will continue to be a successful coach and leader here at WVU.”

In 2024, Green helped lead the Gamecocks to a 9-5 record, the Conference USA championship and a spot in a second straight bowl game. The defense finished No. 5 nationally in fumbles recovered, No. 10 in red zone defense, No. 15 in turnovers gained and No. 22 in turnover margin. The Gamecocks were No. 2 in Conference USA in tackles for loss, No. 3 in sacks and No. 4 in rushing defense. Defensive end J-Rock Swain was named All-Conference USA second-team.

Nysewander rejoins Rodriguez after serving as his inside receivers/tight ends coach for the past two years at Jacksonville State.

“I am happy that Michael is joining the coaching staff at West Virginia,” Rodriguez said. “He is a good offensive coach who did an outstanding job for the past two years as a member of my staff at Jacksonville State. He brings additional experience with him including several years at Ole Miss and will be a great addition to the WVU coaching staff.”

Last season, the JSU offense finished No. 4 in FBS in rushing, No. 6 in first-down offense, No. 8 in passing yards per completion, No. 11 in scoring offense and No. 21 in total offense.

Meanwhile, WVU Hall of Fame running back Noel Devine reportedly will serve as an offensive analyst next season. Multiple outlets reported the move and Devine confirmed it on social media.

“Blessing to be in this position a prayer that’s been answered for sure!” Devine wrote. “(L)ooking forward to learning and working hard to helping build the culture and tradition coach Rod Instilled in me and former players at WVU.”

Devine is third in career rushing yards at WVU with 4,315 and sixth with 29 rushing touchdowns. The North Fort Myers, Florida, native was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2009, he was an All-Big East first-team pick and a Maxwell Award semifinalist.
