The West Virginia University football team announced two more hires to its coaching staff, including another coach’s son.

Jake Casteel, the son of current Mountaineer bandits coach Jeff Casteel, has been hired as the defensive assistant coach on the Mountaineer coaching staff.

“We are excited to welcome Jake back home to Morgantown to continue on our coaching staff as the defensive assistant,” WVU coach Rich Rodriguez said. “His knowledge, passion for the game and strong defensive background will be key in helping us build a competitive and hard-nosed defense.”

Jake Casteel, a former Northern Arizona linebacker, comes to West Virginia from Jacksonville State where he was the defensive analyst and SAM’s coach. The Gamecock linebackers accounted for more than 240 tackles in 2024 to lead the No. 11 ranked red zone defense in the country. The JSU defense also finished No. 16 nationally in turnovers gained with 24.

Before Jacksonville State, Casteel landed his first full-time position at Cal Poly as the linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator in 2022 after serving stints at West Virginia (2021) and Boise State (2020) as a defensive graduate assistant.

The team also announced the hire of Derek Dressler as assistant offensive line coach.

“I am thrilled to have Derek join us in Morgantown,” Rodriguez said. “He has a great love and familiarity with the state of West Virginia and how I run my offense and will continue to be a big part of developing our offensive lines.”

A former standout center at Concord University, Dressler arrives from Jacksonville State where he served as the offensive line analyst and defensive scout team coordinator. In his three seasons, the Gamecocks’ offense had three all-conference linemen, the No. 5 FCS rushing offense in 2022 (251.0) and the No. 3 FBS rushing offense in 2023 (236.7) and 2024 (251.2).
