High School Roundup: River Earns Chance To Three-Peat; Steubenville Catholic Cruises By Red Knights
HANNIBAL – River will be seeking a third straight OVAC WVU Medicine Class 2A Girls Basketball Championship Saturday following its victory Monday night.
The second-seeded Pilots (12-7) navigated past No. 3 Southern Local, 58-27 in semifinal action inside the R.L. Potts Gymnasium.
River led 15-4 after one quarter and 34-10 at the half as Kaylee Hagan scored 14 of her game-best 20 points in the first half. She had six in the first quarter and eight in the second.
Zoey Fox added nine points for the Pilots, while Maci Isaly and Carleigh Trifonoff each had eight. Reese Hobbs finished with seven.
Maddy Jones had seven points to lead the Indians.
Steubenville Catholic 64, Toronto 37
STEUBENVILLE – Steubenville Catholic tallied the first eight points against Toronto, and the top-seeded Crusaders did not look back en route to a 64-37 victory against the fourth-seeded Red Knights in an OVAC Class 2A Semifinal Monday night inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.
The slow start put Toronto behind the 8-ball from the outset.
With the win, Catholic Central will take on No. 2 seed River in the tournament final at 4 p.m. Saturday down at the ECO Center in St. Clairsville. River advanced to the finals by defeating No. 3 seed Southern Local, 58-25, in Monday’s other semifinal.
The Red Knights will now take on the Indians in the consolation final. Southern has defeated Toronto twice (48-33, 63-42) already this season.
A trio of Catholic Central players reached double digits in points to lead the way to the victory. Individually, Mary Rohde recorded a game-high 17 points, Natalie Cherepko collected 15 and Aurie Hoover had 10.
Jayna Reeves recorded a team-high 16 points to lead the way offensively for the Red Knights, while Tatum Derrington tallied 11.

Cameron 68, Heartland Christian 30
CAMERON – Kendra Thomas had 18 points and Maci Neely 17 as the Dragons continued their push for five consecutive OVAC WVU Medicine Class 1A Championship with a rout of the visiting Lions.

MARTINS FERRY – Lindsey Best netted 21 points as the Purple Riders handed the Warriors a 10-point loss inside Tolbert Gymnasium.
Giana Chirpas added eight points for Martins Ferry. Maddie Lucas chipped in seven and Lindse Sidon six.
John Marshall 50, Parkersburg South 37
MOUNDSVILLE – Rilee Storm lit it up for 22 points and Kaylee White added 14 as the Monarchs defeated the Patriots inside the John Marshall Field House.
Buckeye Local 56, Bridgeport 25
BRIDGEPORT – The Panthers received 22 points from Maddy Roset in rolling past the Bulldogs on Frank Baxter Court inside John J. Havlicek Gymnasium. Sammi Westfall added 11 and Alyssa Dailey nine.
Hannah Brewer paced Bridgeport with eight.
Monroe Central 67, Buckeye Trail 32
WOODSFIELD – The Seminoles led 12-3 after one quarter and were never threatened in routing the visiting Warriors on Junior Winland Court.
Mayzie Emery led four Monroe Central players in double digits with 14 points, one more than Jacey English. Jadyn Miller and Karsyn Muncy had 11 each. Brylee McFrederick finished with nine.
English also collected 10 rebounds.
Valley 54, Brooke 46
BROOKE – Laken Dawson scored 17 points to lead the Lumberjills over the Bruins for a road victory Monday.
Dawson, who scored 15 in the second half, was joined in double figures by Kynnedi Dallison, who scored a dozen. Michaela Miller scored nine.
Brooke led 22-19 at halftime but Valley doubled the Bruins up in the third quarter, 16-8, to pull ahead.

Wheeling Park Sweeps By Brooke
WELLSBURG – The Patriots nipped the Bruins by 16 pins and the girls won by 172.
Kaden Miller led Wheeling Park with a 224 game and 381 series.
Darian Hilton rolled a 227 game and 410 series for Brooke.
The Bruins’ Kaylee Tuttle had a 156 game and 283 series.
