Local Roundup: Local Wrestlers Win Spot In State Tournament
MORGANTOWN – Twenty W.Va. Class AAA wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament in Huntington in two weeks by finishing in the top 4 of their respective weight classes Saturday during the Region I Tournament at University High School.
Wheeling Park and John Marshall each had eight qualifiers, with Brooke recording four.
Between them, however, they produced just one regional champion – that being Patriots’ senior Jack Lowe (150). He did so with a pin in the finals.
Joining Lowe in Huntington at Marshall Park Health Arena will be teammates Bodie Cox (106), Isaac Sands (165), Jameson Maynard (190) and Malaki Washington (215) who all finished runner up. Also headed south are third-placer Nate Hodge (157) and Noah White (175) and Hunter Means (285) both of whom took fourth.
John Marshall was led by runners-up Zander Ward (138) and Kaden Harding (144). Nathan Hughes (113), Brooks Harrison (165) and Maverick Lemasters (175) all took third, with Clayton Pyles-Dugas (120), Carter Adkins (132) and Waylon Wyckoff (15) all finished fourth.
Qualifying for the Bruins were Joseph Rea (113), Michael Gibson (126), Landon Burdine (132) and Garrett Moore (190). They all placed fourth.
University, with seven of the 14 individual champions, ran away from the 9-team field with 264 points. Fairmont Senior was second at 195. Wheeling Park (157) and John Marshall (150) were third and fourth, respectively. Brooke finished seventh with 84.
Class A/AA
ST. MARYS – The northern panhandle will be represented by 27 individuals after qualifying Saturday at the Region 1 Tournament at St. Marys High School.
Oak Glen, which finished third in the team standings with 179.5 points, leads the way with eight, including champions Greg Sauers (175) and Noah Schmidt (285).
They will be joined by teammates Jordan Tomsic (106), Aiden Anderson (113) and Wyatt Wolanski (132) who were all runners-up. Logan Graham (138) and Hayden Lamb (144) both took third, while Richie Gudino (215) was fourth.
Cameron, which was right behind Oak Glen in fourth place with 152.5, is sending six matmen to Huntington. They are led by champions Marshall Crow (138), Slaton Pettit (150) and Eli Tedrow (157). Braxton Birch (126) and Talen Brown (144) are going as second-place finishers, while Maverick Lilley (106) finished third.
Weir and Tyler Consolidated have four each, while defending Class A state champion Wheeling Central checks in with three and Magnolia two.
Representing the Red Riders are Wyatt Hostutler (120-2nd); Joshua DeFelice (165-4th); Ben Bryan (175-3rd) and Ashton Hans (285-4th).
The Silver Knights qualified Colsen Spragg (138-4th); Kellan Dalrymple (144-4th); Gideon Winfrey (150-3rd) and Bronson Winfrey (165-2nd).
The Maroon Knights have defending champion Isaac Martin (215-1st); Tylique Marshall (106-4th) and Isaac Lucious (190-3rd).
The Blue Eagles are represented by Dominic Harper (120-4th) and Eden Harlan (190-4th).
The state tournament is set for Thursday, March 6-8.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Wheeling Central 85, Logan 72
EAST WHEELING – Eli Sancomb lit it up for 41 points Saturday night as the Maroon Knights topped the visiting Wildcats on Coach Skip Prosser Court. The junior dandy had 12 field goals and was perfect on all 14 free throw attempts.
Troy Anthony added 12 points, while Nico Kusic and Max Olejasz had 10 each.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wheeling Central 88, Robert C. Byrd 34
EAST WHEELING – Kaitlyn Blake fired in 26 points as the Maroon Knights rolled past the visiting Eagles on Coach Skip Prosser Court.
Seneca Heller added 17 and Addie Payton 11.
