High School Roundup: Cameron, Indian Creek Score OVAC Semifinal Victories

BOWERSTON – Cameron scored six times in the top of the eighth inning to stun No. 2 Conotton Valley, 9-3, in an OVAC Class 1A semifinal Monday night.

The third-seeded Dragons will now play Madonna on either Friday or Saturday at Edison’s Unified Sports Complex in Richmond. It is Cameron’s fourth consecutive trip to the finals, with the Blue Dons being the opponent three times. The Dragons have won one title.

Anthony Bellanco singled in two runs to give Cameron the lead in the top of the eighth, while Brody Smith followed with a single to score Bellanco. Ike Yoho chased a run in with a sacrifice bunt and Soier Reed grounded out as another run scored. Wes Starcher capped the outburst with an RBI single.

Kasun Angel, who struck out eight and walked six in five innings, singled four times as Cameron banged out 13 hits. Zayde Long singled thrice and drove in three runs, while Starcher had a pair of singles and a run batted in.

Indian Creek 5, Harrison Central 2

CADIZ – For the third time in five days the Redskins have defeated the Huskies. However, the third time was in an OVAC Class 4A semifinal.

Sylus Hyde scattered three hits and struck out 11 for Indian Creek. He also singled in a run.

Dom DeGruttolla belted a two-run homer as the Redskins scored four times in the first and once in the second. Hunter Rusnak doubled in a run and Sy Barcalow singled in another.

Harrison Central’s Coleton Rutter fanned nine and allowed just four hits in taking the loss. Kayden Dunkle drove in a run with a triple and Gage Stoneking singled in a run. Rutter had a double.

Indian Creek will now face St. Clairsville for the championship.

Madonna 17, Trinity Christian 1

WEIRTON – The Madonna baseball is on a roll as the Blue Dons look to defend their OVAC championship.

Madonna — the No. 1 seed — scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning against No. 4 seed Trinity Christian and never looked back en route to a victory in five innings against the Warriors in an OVAC Class 1A tournament semifinal Monday evening at Edwin J. Bowman Field.

The win was Madonna’s 10th straight of the season.

Madonna defeated Cameron 10-4 in the final last year.

Lazear picked up the win for Madonna against Trinity Christian (7-9). Lazear struck out nine without walking a batter in his three innings of work on the mound. Sam Brooks came on to pitch the fifth. Brooks struck out three and walked one in his two innings of work.

Individually, Matt Geer collected two singles, a home run and four RBI, Reed Wilharm delivered three singles and four RBI and David Connors contributed a single, a double, a triple and an RBI. Also, Kaiden Wells tallied two doubles and an RBI.

Union Local 14, Bellaire 4

MORRISTOWN – The Jets erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth in cruising past the visiting Big Reds.

Billy Schumacher launched a three-run home as Union Local collected 14 hits. Hayden Jenkions drove in four runs with a single and double, while Peyton Causby doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs. Logan Hess and Karson Grigatis each singled, doubled and plated two runs.

Braylon Akers struck out eight, walked one and yielded five singles.

Grant Vasey and Brae Schmidli each singled in a run for the Big Reds.

Jefferson County Christian 15, Beallsville 0

MINGO JUNCTION – Lee Gump threw a no-hitter facing the minimum number of batters and the Royals bats came alive, belting out 18 hits in a five-inning game vs. the Blue Devils.

Gump struck out two and issued no walks. Beallsville’s only runner came via error, and was doubled off.

At the plate, Aiden Howard was 4-4 with two doubles. Wyatt Hervey was 3-4 with a triple and a double. Carl Bonecutter was 3-4 with a triple. The Royals are 10-4 and take on Bridgeport tomorrow.

SOFTBALL

Wheeling Central 11, Tyler Consolidated 2

KIDWELL – Josie Frizzell and Olivia Kiaski combined on a one-hitter as the Maroon Knights rolled past the host Silver Knights.

Frizzell struck out eight in three innings and Kiaski punched out another three. Each walked a batter.

Erin Maxwell singled and doubled for Wheeling Central. Kiaski had a pair of one-base raps.

Union Local 13, Bellaire 7

MORRISTOWN – The Jets plated six runs in the bottom of the third and tacked on seven more in the fifth to take down the visiting Big Reds.

Myah Martin drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Alli Kellaway also had three runs batted in with a single and double. Winning pitcher Kylie Stidd singled twice and drove in two runs, while Eve Blakley had a two-run single.

Addison Kovach singled twice and slugged a solo home run for Bellaire. Emilee Menendez had a two-run double.

Weir 5, Madonna 1

WEIRTON – City bragging rights once again belong to the Weir softball team.

Weir scored five runs in the first three innings on its way to a 5-1 victory against city-rival Madonna Tuesday evening at the Roberta “Birdie” DeFrancis Softball Field.

Eliza Utt picked up the win for Weir. Utt struck out nine and walked one, while limiting Madonna to four hits on the day. During the game, Utt surpassed the 400 strikeout mark for her career. The junior now had 407 Ks in her career.

Peyton Conley took the loss for Madonna. Conley struck out three and walked two. She kept Weir off the scoreboard in the final three innings of the game.

The Red Riders recorded nine hits in the game – two of which were doubles.

Individually, Utt tallied a single, a double and an RBI, Loganne Barton, Brayley Lash and Zoey Spencer each had an RBI.

Rylee Birkhimer belted a home run for the Blue Dons.
