High School Roundup: Central Suffers First Setback; Jets Outdo Bobcats On The Road
CALDWELL – All good things must come to an end. Wheeling Central found out the hard way Tuesday.
The Maroon Knights (11-1) dropped a 9-4 decision to host Caldwell Tuesday in a battle of OVAC Class leaders. Wheeling Central holds down the top spot in Class 3A, while the Redskins are the Class 2A leaders.
After collecting 19 hits in a 24-0 win over Oak Glen on Monday, Wheeling Central could manage just six singles off a pair of Caldwell hurlers. Braxton Billick and Gary Hatfield had four singles between them. Zayne Rosnick had a two-run single.
Trailing 4-0, the Redskins scored three times in the bottom of the third and added a six-spot in the fourth.
Wheeling Central remains on the road today at Marietta.
Union Local 5, Cambridge 1
CAMBRIDGE – Don’t look now but Union Local is making a valiant push for the fourth – and final – OVAC Class 3A baseball playoff spot.
The Jets (5-4) entered the week in eighth place, but after a victory over Martins Ferry on Monday and their decision over Cambridge at Don Coss Field on Tuesday, they are right in the thick of things as the cut-off is Friday.
Braylon Akers went the first six innings to pick up the win. He fanned five, walked five and gave up one run on three hits. He threw 90 pitches, with 49 being strikes. Akers also drove in a run, as did Logan Hess. Konnor Kovacs had two singles.
Union Local hosts Martins Ferry today and travels to Bellaire on Friday.
River 16, Valley 0
HANNIBAL – Wyatt Majors tossed a 1-hit shutout as the Pilots navigated past the visiting Lumberjacks. He struck out four and walked two and needed just 50 pitches.
River banged out 16 hits – all singles – as Lucas Dennis had three and two RBI. Cooper Roberts had two singles and three runs batted in. Kaden Hunt and Kasen Rothenbuhler each singled twice and drove in two runs.
Linsly 3, Shadyside 1
WHEELING – Donavan Jones had a two-run double in the second inning to lead the Cadets over the visiting Tigers at Holloway Field.
Dom Fato had two singles. Vinny Gorence picked up the win in relief.
Barnesville 11, Shenandoah 1
BARNESVILLE – Bobby Thompson fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks as the Shamrocks blasted the Zeps at Memorial Park.
Casey Carpenter, Blake Burkhart and Parker Sobutka all had two hits each for Barnesville.

ST. JOE – The red-hot Purple Riders (9-1) won for the ninth straight time with their doubleheader sweep of the host Big Reds on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.
In the opener, Abby Snedeker went the distance inside the circle with six strikeouts and a walk. She helped her own cause with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Calleigh Holt singled twice for Bellaire. Marissa Pacifico singled and doubled.
Gracie Lucas belted two doubles and drove in three runs. Makayla Cole singled twice.
In the nightcap, Maddie Lucas fanned nine, walked two and scattered three hits in earning the win. She also singled twice and smacked two doubles that plated five runs.
Chirpas singled, tripled and drove in four runs, while Snedeker blasted a two-run homer. Kendahl Brandon had three singles, a double and a run batted in.
Emilee Menendez had a solo homer for the Big Reds.
Bridgeport 6, Magnolia 3
BRIDGEPORT – Hanna Brewer struck out 11 and Addie Snodgrass drove in three runs as the Bulldogs doubled up the Blue Eagles on Irene Ehni Memorial Field.
Brewer went the distance inside the circle. She issued one walk and spaced out eight hits.
Snodgrass and Vanessa Mullen each doubled twice, with Mullen driving in a run. Snodgrass also singled.
Caroline Heil had a single, double and triple to drive in three runs. Malloey McDiffitt singled and doubled.
River 7, Shadyside 2
SHADYSIDE – Ava Wohnhas struck out 15 and allowed just two hits in pitching the Pilots past the host Tigers. She walked four and singled and doubled at the plate.
Mallarie Maddie drove in two runs with a single and double. Kaylee Hagan singled in a run and Presley Kilburn added an RBI.
Kamryn Parker tripled in the only two runs for Shadyside. Arianna Saxton fanned nine in six-plus innings.
Barnesville 16, Monroe Central 15
WOODSFIELD – Chaela Smolira drove in five runs with a single, two doubles and a home run as the Shamrocks outlasted the Seminoles. Payton Dudzik also knocked in five runs with a single and a home run.
Payton Loudin, the winning pitcher in relief, smacked a two-run homer. Maddy Tyson singled thrice and doubled.
Allie McFrederick doubled and homered to drive in five runs for Monroe Central. Juana McElroy singled twice and doubled to knock in two runs. Kenadie Loch had three singles and two runs batted in.
Parkersburg South 1, Wheeling Park 0
PARKERSBURG – For the second time in eight days, the Wood County Patriots got the best of the Ohio County Patriots.
Anniston Shelton struck out 16, giving her 35 in two games against Wheeling Park. She allowed just three hits, two by Brenna Tipton.
