High School Roundup: Creek Completes Home-And-Home Sweep; Panthers Split Doubleheader

BARNESVILLE – Luca Shane singled in two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs Friday as Martins Ferry edged past Barnesville, 4-3, in high school baseball action under the lights on the Memorial Park diamond in western Belmont County.

With the game deadlocked at 2 after six complete, Martins Ferry’s Ayden Ludolph and Eli Smith had back-to-back singles to open the seventh, With two outs, Shane came through in the clutch.

Barnesville made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as it scored once.

Hunter Shutler had a route-going performance on the mound for the Purple Riders. He struck out three.

Ty Watters had a single and two RBI for the Shamrocks.

With the win, Martins Ferry might have squeezed its way into the OVAC Class 3A playoffs.

The final standings and playoff pairings will be announced Sunday by the OVAC. Semifinal games are set for Monday with the top two teams in each class serving as the home team.

Indian Creek 9, Harrison Central 2

WINTERSVILLE – Indian Creek (8-1) completed their home-and-home sweep of the Huskies as Sylus Hyde was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

He finished with two RBI.

Winning pitcher Gavin Pownall drove in three runs with a pair of singles, while also striking out five, walking one and teaming with James Brothers on a seven-hitter.

Edison 18, Buckeye Local 5

CONNORVILLE – The Panthers salvaged a win in a split doubleheader as Kaleb Stang struck out 10, walked three and yielded three hits against the visiting Beavers.

He also delivered a two-run single that keyed a three-run bottom of the sixth.

In the opener, the Wildcats scored at least one run in all five innings, including eight in their last at-bat to trigger the run-rule against the Panthers.

JD Henderson singled four times and drove in a like number of runs for Edison. Chase Freeman knocked in three runs with two doubles.

Hurricane 7, John Marshall 0

HURRICANE – The Monarchs were held to three hits by the Redskins. One was a double by Matt Markonich.

Shadyside 5, Conotton Valley 1

BOWERSTON – Cole Micker singled and tripled and Ryan Collins singled twice as the Tigers picked up a huge road win over the Rockets.

Aaron Pacifico belted a two-run single for Shadyside, which received a complete game effort on the mound from Luke Crozier. He struck out two, walked one and scattered five singles.

Damien Russell and Trenton Marling both had an RBI.

SOFTBALL

Union Local 9, Bellaire 6

ST. JOE – Eve Blakley went six innings inside the circle, striking out seven and walking one in leading the Jets over the host Big Reds. She also drove in two runs with a single.

Myah Martin belted a twor-un homer for Union Local, while Laken Vinskovich had a single and two doubles.

Calleigh Holt drove in two runs with a single and double for Bellaire. Addison Kovach slugged a solo homer and Rylie Porter singled and doubled twice.

Shadyside 1, Frontier 0

SHADYSIDE – The Tigers are making a run at a home game in the OVAC Class 2A playoffs after handing the Class 1A-leading Cougars their first loss of the season.

Arianna Saxton continued to shine inside the circle.

The senior struck out 10, walked three and allowed just three singles in her gem. He needed only 83 pitches, of which 56 were strikers.

Shadyside scored the lone run in the third on a solo home run by Kaylie Warnock. She also had a single.

River 11, Fort Frye 1

SARDIS – Kaylee Hagan singled twice to drive in three runs as the Pilots (5-9) navigated past the visiting Cadets. Jayda Kinny-Blair and winning pitcher Ava Wohnhas both singled twice, with Kinny-Blair recording an RBI.

Scoreless after two-and-a-half innings, River scored three times in the third inning and three more in the fourth before tacking on five in the fifth to seal the deal.

Wohnhas struck out eight, walked one and gave up two hits.

Sissonville 6, Wheeling Park 4

CLARKSBURG – The Patriots dropped a pair of contests at Robert C. Byrd High School.

In the opener, Abigail O’Donnell had a solo home run and Grace Tamburin doubled in another run. Belle Thomas added a run-scoring single.

In the second game, Tamburin and Delaney Randolph delivered run-scoring base hits and Harmony Bittner had an RBI.

Steubenville 10, Indian Valley 8

STEUBBENVILLE – Steubenville trailed Indian Valley by four runs on two occasions, however Big Red did not quit as the Red and Black plated eight straight runs to rally for a 10-8 comeback victory on a hot Friday afternoon up at the Crimson Complex.

Shelby Gossett took the loss for the Braves (6-6). She struck out two batters and walked four.

Big Red out-hit Indian Valley, 11-10. Big Red recorded six extra-base hits on their way to the win, while Indian Valley delivered two – one of which was a home run.

Individually, Paige Matteson produced a pair of doubles and five RBI to lead the way offensively for Steubenville.

Also, Sena Smith and Tuttle each tallied a single, a double and an RBI, Sagan Smarrella smacked a double and Sophia Zorne ended up with a double. Finally, Addy Meyer added three singles.

Patriots Have Two Champions

PARKERSBURG – Wheeling Park had one champion in each of the boys and girls portions of the Russ Parsons Invitational at Parkersburg’s Stadium Field.

The Patriots’ TJ Pockl leaped 6-5 to win the pole vault. No other competitor cleared 6-0.

On the girls side, the Patriots 4×100 relay squad of Lakin Chambers, Addison Reineke, Niki Robitaille and Hailey Hastings ran 54.04 for the gold.

Ritchie Co./W.Va. Insurance Invitational

ELLENBORO – Tyler Consolidated’s Amos Kimble won the 1600 in 4:28.74 and the 3200 in 9:38.27 while also anchoring the winning 4×800 relay team which included Travis Moore, Kayden Utt and Brody Nice. They timed out in 8:44.97.

Valley’s Gavin Derby claimed the 100 in 11.13 while Magnolia’s Darin Shimp heaved the discus 135-10.

On the girls side, the Silver Knights’ Lily Dillaman nearly duplicated the feat by Amos as she won the 100 high hurdles in 16.74 and the 300 lows in 50.93. She anchored the winning shuttle hurdles relay of Bridget Doak, Bella Garuccio and Octavia Studenic. They clocked out at 1:15.30.

Valley’s Laken Dawson jumped 16-10.5 to win the long jump and Magnolia’s Leah Hartlin took the high jump with a leap of 5-0.
