West Liberty’s McGeary Is NCAA DII Wrestler Of The Year

MANHEIM, PA – West Liberty’s Ty McGeary has been named the 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Wrestler of the Year, as announced Monday afternoon by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The honor is a fitting culmination to an extraordinary collegiate career marked by dominance, resilience, and sportsmanship.

McGeary, competing at 184 pounds, captured his third consecutive NCAA Division II national title this season. He finished the year with an outstanding 33-1 record, including an impressive 29 bonus point victories. His remarkable performances earned him the title of Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2025 NCAA Division II National Championships. Additionally, he was recognized as the NCAA Division II Most Dominant Wrestler of the season and ranked fourth in total falls.

West Liberty Head Coach Danny Irwin praised McGeary’s character and work ethic, emphasizing the qualities that set him apart.

“Ty’s accomplishments are lengthy, but the coolest part of his story is how humble and genuine he is,” Irwin said. “His respect for competition and the details that go into the preparation shined this season. He is an excellent example of what being a student-athlete should look like. It was really fun to be one of his coaches!”

McGeary’s achievements placed him among an elite group of regional finalists who contended for the national honor. He was selected as the Division II Men’s Wrestler of the Year over a competitive field that included:

Beyond his national recognition, McGeary has solidified himself as the most decorated wrestler in West Liberty and Mountain East Conference (MEC) history. He became the first wrestler in program and conference history to win four consecutive MEC championships. Over his collegiate career, McGeary amassed a remarkable 132-7 record, including a dominant 66-1 mark over his final two seasons. A four-time All-American, he was named the MEC Wrestler of the Year for the 2023-24 season and also excelled in the classroom, earning MEC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors with a 3.69 GPA as a Cyber Security major.

Before joining West Liberty, McGeary was a standout at West Allegheny High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year letterman. His high school career concluded with a 38-9 senior season and a sixth-place finish at the 2018 PIAA AAA State Championships.

McGeary’s career at West Liberty will be remembered not only for his individual accolades but also for the leadership and inspiration he provided to his teammates. His legacy extends beyond the mat, serving as a benchmark for future generations of student-athletes.
