High School Roundup: Dragons, Bruins Punch Tickets To Regional Championships

CAMERON – Cameron punched its ticket to the winner’s bracket of the W.Va. Class A, Region I baseball tournament’s bottom bracket with a 7-2 victory over No. 3 Notre Dame Thursday night inside the City Park.

Soier Reed singled twice and drove in two runs for the second-seeded Dragons. He also struck out two in relief of winner Wes Starcher. Together the duo fanned five and walked three while spacing out 11 hits. Starcher belted an RBI double.

Zayde Long clubbed a two-run double for Cameron, which scored six times in the home half of the fifth to take a 7-0 advantage. Hunter Evans had two singles and Kason Angel singled home a run.

Cameron will next play at home on Saturday against the winner of Friday’s Magnolia at Notre Dame elimination game. The first pitch Saturday is set for noon.

W.Va. Class AAA Region I

Brooke 5, North Marion 2

WELLSBURG – Brooke recorded two runs in the bottom of the first inning against North Marion, and the Bruins went on to defeat the Huskies in a West Virginia Class AAA Region 1 Tournament Game Thursday evening at home.

With the win, Brooke advances to the regional final for the first time since 1998.

Andrew Murdock struck out eight and walked one en route to picking up the win for Brooke.

The boys from Brooke County outhit the visitors, 10-3. The Bruins had nine singles and one triple in the win.

Offensively for Brooke, Henry Anderson tallied two singles and an RBI, Murdock collected a single and a triple and Aiden Provenzano, Gino Provenzano and Garrett Moore all contributed a single and an RBI. Also, Zac O’Mery added two singles.

North Marion answered with a run in the third to cut its deficit down to 2-1, however, the victors plated two more runs in the third to increase their advantage to 4-1. Both teams scored a run in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Regular Season

Harrison Central 6, St. Clairsville 5

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The visiting Huskies built a 6-3 lead before holding off a late rally by the Red Devils on Unified Bank Field at the Junior Sports Complex.

Gage Stoneking, Hunter Snyder and Anthony Pelegreen all singled twice for Harrison Central, with Stoneking and Snyder each driving in a run. Kolten Mizer added an RBI single.

Knox McKibben earned the mound win with five Ks and two base on balls in five innings of work.

Caiden Bailey drove in three runs for St. Clairsville with two singles. Jaxon Starks doubled twice to knock in a run. Brody Saunders also singled in a run.

Buckeye Local 4, Shadyside 3

CONNORVILLE – Jordan Kovalski’s walk-off single lifted the Panthers over the visiting Tigers at Mazeroski Park.

Dom Kempton was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and a walk. He yielded five hits.

Wyatt Parr doubled in a run for Shadyside.

SOFTBALL

Barnesville 7, Union Local 4

MORRISTOWN – The Shamrocks out-paced the Jets on their way to a road victory on Thursday in their annual Strike Out Cancer Game

Peyton Loudin earned the win for Barnesville. She struck out four in four innings. Abby Johnson pitched the final three scoreless frames.

Kylee Powell had two hits for Barnesville, while Sophie Carpenter had two RBI. Barnesville and Union Local each had seven hits, though the Jets committed three errors.

Union Local’s Myah Martin and Alli Kellaway each homered and each finished with two RBI.
