GLEN DALE – The Wheeling Park Patriots put together a sound all-around effort Monday in their maiden voyage of the postseason, while the John Marshall Monarchs will have to bounce back with their playoff lives on the line following a 6-0 Park victory in sectional softball action.
With the win in the double-elimination sectional tourney, Park will now face Morgantown on Tuesday. The loser of that game will face John Marshall again later in the week.
On Monday, Bryn Ernest led the way offensively for Park with three hits, including a home run, one of two for Park. Grace Tamburin also homered for the Patriots.
Ernest finished with two RBI, as did Brenna Tipton. Ernest, Tipton, Tamburin and leadoff Isabelle Thomas all had multi-hit efforts for the Patriots, who had 14 hits in all.
Delaney Randolph pitched a complete game for Park, scattering four hits throughout the game and punching out two.

“I liked that we put the bat on the ball,” Wheeling Park head coach Pat Durkin said. “[John Marshall’s] outfield made a couple really nice plays and they kept the game close. But, we hit two home runs, our girls weren’t overswinging, the defense did a pretty good job- made a couple errors. Delaney Randolph pitched a really well-controlled game. I’m happy for them. We head to Morgantown tomorrow, they’re a tough team and we’ll see what we can do down there.”
John Marshall left fielder Aubrey Lilly made multiple high-difficulty putouts on the move, including a shoe-string catch at a full forward sprint in the fourth inning. Offensively though, the Monarchs couldn’t quite break through despite getting runners in scoring position several different instances. Masyn Inclan knocked a double and Ella Finley cracked a pair of singles for John Marshall.
Unable to afford another loss in the double-elimination format, John Marshall will need to string wins together to keep their season alive.
“I’d like to see some more fight out of them,” John Marshall head coach Robby Blake said. “I think we’re still the young team that we were at the beginning of the season, and hopefully moving forward we can respond and act like where I thought we could be at this point, 25 games into the season. [Park’s] better than us, there’s not two ways about it, but I don’t think we gave them our best game. Hopefully we can put it together on Wednesday and get a different outcome.”
