University Of Charleston Wins MEC Commissioner’s Cup

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The University of Charleston has won the 2024-25 Mountain East Conference Commissioner’s Cup, the league’s annual award that recognizes overall athletic excellence among its membership. UC has won eight consecutive Commissioner’s Cup titles and 10 overall since the MEC began competition in 2013-14.

The Commissioner’s Cup standings are compiled using an “all-sports rating.” This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).

Charleston all-sports rating of 0.9594595 topped runner-up Frostburg State (0.6783439) and third-place Fairmont State (0.6416667). The Golden Eagles won conference championships in football, men’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, and softball.

Frostburg State won the women’s lacrosse conference championship, and had the highest-scoring MEC men’s and women’s teams at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. The Bobcats also finished atop the North Division women’s soccer standings.

Fairmont State swept the MEC men’s and women’s basketball championships and won the Acrobatics & Tumbling title. The Falcons’ softball team also finished first in the North Division.

Locally, West Liberty (0.5544041) finished fifth and Wheeling University (0.3807107) was 11th.
