Site of 2014 West Virginia chemical spill to be auctioned

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The former site of a company that spilled chemicals into a West Virginia river is going up for auction.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported Monday the former Freedom Industries site will be available at an auction next week.
A chemical known as Crude MCHM spilled from a Freedom storage tank into the Elk River in 2014. It was upriver from a water plant in Charleston and about 300,000 people were told not to drink or clean with the water for days.
Joe R. Pyle Complete Auction and Realty Service is organizing the auction. Spokesman Travis Williamson wouldn’t say what the minimum bid amount is that must be met the day of the Dec. 13 auction. He says the property will go to a nonprofit or state government if bids aren’t met.
