John Marshall Student of The Year Is Chosen
Each school year, the professional staff at John Marshall High School selects from the 12 students of the month a student of the year. This year’s student of the year and scholarship winner is Shaun Hancher.
Hancher’s activities include the Drug Free Club, John Marshall marching and concert bands, Marshall County Strings, John Marshall Chamber Orchestra, Monarch Company, Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra, Our Lady of Lebanon Church choir director/organist, John Marshall band field commander, coordinator of select strings quartet/quintet and violin soloist, Strand Theatre “A Christmas Carol” production, West Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts, and Mound City Band (four years).
He has received a West Virginia Higher Education grant, the Pell Grant and a Creative Arts Scholarship to West Virginia University. Honors include Regional Honor Band (four years), WVMEA State Honor Recitalist (four years), West Virginia All-State Band first chair tuba (three years) and National Honor Society.
The Justice Chapter of the National Honor Society sponsors the student of the year program and a trust scholarship is provided by the staff at the school. The scholarship honors the late Gary Buskirk, who was the curriculum coordinator in the school system for 20 years.
The scholarship is funded primarily by the John Marshall staff by their contributions on “Jeans Day,” in which staff members are allowed to dress down for work in exchange for a donation.
