Cupboard Not Bare at Big Red

By ED LOOMAN

STEUBENVILLE — There will be plenty of new faces on the floor when Steubenville’s boys’ basketball team opens its season on Dec. 12 at home against Boardman.

Seven regulars are gone from the 2016-2017 Steubenville squad which went 19-6, played for the OVAC Class 4A title and was knocked off in Division II sectional play by Buckeye Local.

Missing via graduation are all-district performer Charles Reeves, now playing football at Pitt, Pookie Petteway, who had a stellar freshman campaign for Ohio Dominican’s football squad, Jack Marx, now playing at Franciscan University, Isaiah Lee-Granatir, Mitchell Gulan, Alec Davis and Ny’Juan Robinson.

Haney’s cupboard is not bare as he welcomes back four letter winners, led by senior guard/forward Da’von Smith. A two-year letter winner, Smith averaged eight points per game last season and four rebounds. An Eastern District Division II honorable mention selection as a junior, Smith was a member of the Eastern Ohio Sports Complex All-Star team which played in the Adidas Summer Championships, held in Las Vegas during July.

The other senior letterwinner back is Javon Davis, who primarily came off Haney’s bench last season and averaged 5.2 points per game.

Junior lettermen back are Josh Zimmerman (3.2 points per game) and James Roundtree IV (3.4 points per game).

Players looking to earn varsity playing minutes are juniors Carlo Biasi, Ryan Rauch, Nicco Bracone, Jorian Jones, Jordan Wallace and Kevin Bishop. Sophomores in the mix include Tayveon Crawford and Calvin Bickerstaff.

“We’ve been missing some guys at practice because they are still involved in football,” Haney said. “But the guys who have been there are really getting after it and playing hard. We have some inexperienced guys when it comes to playing at the varsity level but they are trying to get better every day.”
