SCC Has Experience

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville Catholic Central’s girls’ basketball team had a banner season a year ago.

The Crusaders went 15-9, their first winning season since 2008. They advanced to the OVAC Class 2A title contest and also won a postseason tournament game for the first time since 2008. Central’s season ended with a loss at Fort Frye in the sectional championship.

Fourth-year coach Jess Looman lost four multi-year starters from that squad but she’s hoping that the foundation they laid will carryover this season.

Missing through graduation are Brittany Bertoia, Gabby Capaldi, Shayna Mirabella and Samm Simmons. All four earned post-season honors and between them, they were responsible for 40 points per game.

“Anyone associated with our program knows how I feel about those girls,” Looman said. “They were with me for three seasons and started what we hope to be a winning tradition for Central girls basketball.”

Looman welcomes back six letterwinners in seniors Grace Godich, Tia Taglione and Brantley Turnage; juniors Christine Dombrowski and Julia Zatta along with sophomore Isabella Oliver.

Oliver was the top scorer among the returnees, averaging 5.5 points per game. Godich, a starter a season ago, averaged 4.3 points and 7.2 rebounds while Turnage contributed three points and six rebounds. Taglione was second on the team in steals and assists.

“Although we have those letterwinners back, we are very young when it comes to varsity playing experience,” Looman said. “We did have a very good summer and focused on meshing our junior varsity players with our veterans.

“We are still working to gel as a team and still trying to determine who our scorers are going to be. There are several things I really like about this group. They play well together, they work very hard and they’re just fun to coach.”

Two additional sophomores also have spots in Looman’s eight-person varsity rotation. They are Hannah Olszewski and Carly Fayak.

Looman added two new members to her staff this year, Don Ogden and Rachel Irvin. Ogden is the former head coach at Madonna.
