Stone Moves Up to Big Chair

By AARON PETCHAL

RICHMOND — Jeff Stone gets his chance to sit in the big chair.

After spending the last five seasons as an assistant coach for the Edison girls’ team, Stone is in his first season as head coach of the Wildcats. Stone replaces Ryan Powell, who spent two seasons as head coach. Stone served as an assistant coach for three years under Jason Ensinger.

Edison returns four lettermen this season, and there are 16 girls in the program. The returning lettermen are seniors Kayla Huff, Sami Springer, Kierstyn Simeral and junior Lauren Ferralli. Ten of the 16 girls are expected to see varsity time this season.

“All the girls are working hard toward the goal of starting varsity,” Stone said. “A final decision on our starters has not been made yet. That’s up in the air at this moment. We still have time before our opening game to see what level of play the girls are going to be capable of.”

The Wildcats have two other seniors — Tommi McConnell and Logan Perry — who are vying for playing time. The seniors and Ferralli are the leaders of the team.

“I am expecting a lot out of our seniors,” Stone said. “Kayla Huff has seen the most varsity time. Her along with the Sami Springer, Kierstyn Simeral and Lauren Ferralli returning from extensive varsity time should help bring the experience level of our team to a competitive level.

“Also, after a year off from the team, Tommi McConnell is returning for her senior year. She will bring with her an aggressiveness that should boost the team defensively. A new first-year player is senior Logan Perry. Logan was brave enough to join the team as a senior, never having played before. It is a great display of the kind of mindset I want our players to have, try something you have never done before.”

Huff is the team’s top returning scorer.

Former Edison player Lynsey Morrison will serve as Stone’s assistant coach.
