St. Vincent de Paul School Emphasizes Community Service
WHEELING — St. Vincent de Paul Parish School will be celebrating National Catholic Schools Week from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4.
The annual celebration will highlight Catholic Education through its theme: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” This theme incorporates several concepts at the heart of Catholic education. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be measured. St. Vincent de Paul School is known for focusing on academic excellence, faith development, and service.
Exciting things are happening at St. Vincent de Paul Parish School. Thanks to a diocesan grant, the school received over the summer, we were able to purchase Chromebooks for the seventh and eighth grade classes. This technology, in addition to the iPad program already in place, provides our students with the tools they need for continued success in the classroom. In addition, the music program was also re-introduced to the students at SVS.
The music program has encouraged growth of the school choir. The choir sings for Masses and annually at Wheeling Hospital and for the Wheeling Nailers.
Service to others is a privilege and a priority at St. Vincent de Paul School. In appreciation of the support we receive from the community, the students and faculty of St. Vincent’s continually strive to give back by completing service projects throughout the year. Each fall, our eighth grade students complete a service project for the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center.
The students and their families delivered over 1,000 bags to residents of Elm Grove, Bethlehem and Triadelphia with a note asking them to fill the bags with canned-goods
Thanks to the generosity of our community, more than 2,500 pounds of food was collected for the center through this project. In addition, the entire school participated in a Thanksgiving food drive and “Sox Box” collection of hats, gloves, and scarves.
The students, their families, and our faculty and staff are looking forward to a great Catholic Schools Week!
Many exciting events have been planned.
To kick off Catholic Schools Week and celebrate our families and parish, we will be holding a pancake breakfast in the St. Vincent de Paul Marist Center on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Please join us and may God bless!
