Josey Jones — Tyler Consolidated
Tyler Consolidated’s Josey Jones has been around volleyball her entire life. Not only that, but she has been around Silver Knight volleyball her entire life.
“We’ve had a Jones on the team off and on for quite a few years. She’s no stranger to Knights Volleyball. She hears it from her sisters (Christy and Sami) and she’s watched countless games,” Tyler Consolidated volleyball coach Richard Summers said. “She’s gradually progressed from a little girl that ran around in the gym and has grown into a strong all around player.”
A strong player indeed. Last season, Jones compiled 365 kills, 403 digs, 84 blocks and 42 aces to help her receive first team all-state honors. Even more impressive, she has also helped Tyler Consolidated to three straight state tournaments.
“The best thing about Josey last year is that she kind of came out of her shell. She became a leader on our floor. She was one of our most vocal players, great leadership on and off the floor,” Summers said. She plays all the way around for us. She plays front row, she plays back row. She doesn’t come off the floor. She has been a nice player in the system now for three years. She’s got five other seniors with her. But her leadership is tremendous. She’s one of the first ones to practice, one of the last ones to leave. She just seems to have a look in her eye and a focus this year, she’s always a competitor, but she seems to be hungry and focused.”
The Silver Knights return a strong nucleus of players that include six seniors including Jones. Summers knows what the goals for her and Tyler Consolidated are. And it will certainly be a fun ride for Jones and her teammates as she embarks on her final campaign in a Silver Knight uniform.
“She’s been there for three straight years,” Summer said about the state tournament. “She’s watched her sister (Christy) win it, watched countless other teams. The biggest thing is her maturity. Josey fully realizes that we have a pretty good ballclub, but she also realizes that our sectional, there’s going to be a good ballclub or two not come out of it. She’s not taking anything for granted and working the best she can and hoping to get better every day.”
