Cadets Have Veteran Cast

WHEELING — Amanda Crews embarks on her fifth season as Linsly softball coach with a veteran cast in the fold.

Crews welcomes back eight letter-winners. Heading the list is hurler Taylor Wisvari-Weir. The talented senior fanned 162 batters last spring.

America Nuckles-Polen was the only graduation loss.

“We are excited to have an upperclass team. This is the first year of many that we’ve not been a primarily young team,” Crews said. “We have great leadership on the team with our seniors and juniors, and our freshmen and sophomores are eager to play and continue to learn about the elements of our program.”

Linsly boasts a roster with three seniors and four juniors.

Wisvari-Weir provides the Cadets with that all-important horse in the circle.

Catching is a position of strength for Linsly with a pair of letterwinners available.

Solid senior letterman Amelia Jones and talented junior Meghan Goodnight will again serve as Wisvari-Weir’s battery mate.

The infield should be quality, as all four spots will be manned by either senior or junior letter-winners.

Junior Maddie Becker will hold down first base while senior April Knight will open at second base. Junior Maddie Clelland is a steadying force at shortstop while classmate Lauryn Patt is the starter at the hot corner.

The Cadets outfield is anchored by sophomore letterman Lizzie Stern. Freshman Johni Lech is a likely a starter in the outfield.

Sophomore Kelsey will see time in the outfield and can spell Wisvari-Weir at pitcher when the need arises. Freshman Jazzlyn Gummer can fill in at third and the outfield.

“The best part about coaching this team is definitely the players. They mesh really well together, and regardless of what we’re doing, they always manage to make it a fun time,” Crews said. “They’re hard-working and they have shown to be dedicated athletes in the offseason, as they participated in other sports, on travel teams and working on their own to get prepared for the 2017 softball season.

“Our first game is drawing near. We are beyond excited. I think we have a lot of positive things to look forward to.”

Crews is being assisted this spring by Darryl Crews, Bob Palicka and Bill Bryson.
