Dailer Enters 27th Season

By KYLE LUTZ

WHEELING — Entering her 27th year as the tennis coach at Wheeling Central, Peggy Dailer is excited as she returns several key players from last year’s squad.

With three players returning looking to get back to Charleston for the state tournament, Gus Schmidt was the lone player lost from 2016 because of graduation and is currently attending the University of Chicago. Schmidt, who played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles was one of four Maroon Knights to make it to the state capital last year, along with seniors Giorgio Alexander and Jacob Coughlan and sophomore David Agcaoili.

Alexander advanced to the quarterfinals last year at No. 2 singles. He also was an OVAC runner-up.

“Giorgio always plays with intensity and should present a tough match-up for every opponent he faces,” Dailer said.

Coughlan returns after a solid run at No. 2 doubles with Agcaoili. Agcaoili also advanced to the semifinal in No. 3 singles.

“David always gives 100 percent as he continues to work hard to try to improve his game,” Dailer said. “Jacob and Josh Yancosek return for their senior season and hope to have a positive impact on the team and its success throughout the season.”

Wheeling Central will be seeing plenty of fresh faces this year as freshmen Isaac Smith and Carmen Alexander join the team with plenty of skill. Other newcomers are Austin Smay, John Wagner, Max Schmidt, Jacky Li, Caesar Lyu and Tony Zhao.

“The Maroon Knights boys’ team is looking forward to getting back on the courts with the goal of returning to Charleston to compete in the West Virginia State Tennis Tournament,” Dailer said.

Unfortunately, Wheeling Central won’t sport a girls tennis team this year. However, there is great interest in both the parochial and middle schools making it a possibility for the Maroon Knights to have a girls team in the near future.

“We know that there are enough girls that are coming to Central next year that are freshmen that are playing tennis and taking lessons,” Dailer said. “So we know that we will have a girls tennis team next year.”

The coach and players are again looking forward to playing their home matches on the tennis courts located at Mount de Chantal.
