Johnson Takes Over at Magnolia

By CODY TOMER

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Angela Johnson is entering into her first season as the head coach of the Magnolia softball team and she is doing so with 15 returning letterwinners.

Johnson spent time on the West Liberty softball team and is ecstatic to be leading the Blue Eagles into the 2017 campaign.

“I am really excited for the opportunity to coach here at Magnolia,” Johnson said. “I am looking forward to a good year with the girls.”

Magnolia finished last season with a 2-17 record, a mark that Johnson hopes to improve.

“Our goal is to have fun but also surprise people this year,” Johnson said. “We hope to have a better season than last year and I really want the girls to just play with a lot of hustle and heart.

“We have a lot of new players, a new coach, a newer field and the girls seem to have a new attitude this year.”

Third baseman Davianne Croasmun was the only senior lost to graduation from last season’s team and is playing at Fairmont State.

This year’s squad features four seniors who are ready to make their mark on the program.

Seniors Emily Shank, Brooke Hostetler, Taylor Ludewig and pitcher Tylar Seckman are heading into their final season with the Blue Eagles and Johnson wants to make it a memorable one.

“I definitely want to make it special for the seniors,” Johnson said. “Although Ludewig is a senior, it is her first year playing but she looks good in practice.”

Sophomore Ashley Tharp stands out as a young member of the Eagles who can make her mark on the club.

“Tharp is going to be pretty strong for us,” Johnson said. “She can pitch and play shortstop, too, and I think our fielding is going to be a lot better.”

The junior class consists of Via Anderson, Lauren Anderson, Alex Berger, Katie Hamrick, Kenna Petin and Alexis Taylor.

Other sophomores taking the field for Magnolia are Morgan Aliff, Mackenzie Ash, Aquera Cabral, Rian Dawson, Lindsay Whiteman and pitcher Ashlyn Piekarski.

Freshmen looking for playing time include pitcher Ashley Kelly, Kayna Anderson, Paige Brill, Haleigh Lauderman and Kyndra Pilant.

Alongside Johnson in the dugout is assistant coach Danny Anderson.
