Linsly Netters Rebuilding

By BUBBA KAPRAL

WHEELING — Dave Riethmiller has built a girls’ tennis juggernaut at Linsly School.

Riethmiller guided the Cadet ladies to their sixth straight OVAC championship last spring. The Cadet girls won 12 of 13 matches a year ago.

All told, Linsly has captured 11 OVAC titles since Riethmiller took over the helm in 1987-88. The Martins Ferry native has compiled a brilliant 272-70 mark as the Cadets’ coach. He also has eight OVAC runner-up team efforts on his resume.

“Some of the highlights from last season were reaching the championship final at every position and Sheridan White winning at No. 1 singles and Amika Ekanem winning at the No. 2 singles,” Riethmiller said. “We were hit hard by graduation, losing players No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 (Madison Helmick).”

The cupboard is not completely empty for the girls’ Cadet netters.

Linsly’s top returning players are Lydia Andlinger, Lakin Snider and Caitlin Mead.

Andlinger has the inside track on becoming the Cadets No. 1 singles players this spring. She was No. 3 last spring and a member of the team’s second doubles team.

Snider and Mead are battling for the next two single spots.

“Reserves from last year Sarah McDermott and Zivya Sutton have been working hard and will compete with several newcomers for positions in the line-up,” Riethmiller said.

Newcomers competing for positions in the lineup are Emma Augustine, Selina Zu, Noora Pitkanen and Eve Ridenhaur. The Cadets will also boast a jayvee team.

“Even though we were hit hard by graduation, I expect us to be competitive in the OVAC,” Riethmiller said. “It has been a real honor to have served as the only girls’ tennis coach that we have had at Linsly.

“I have been blessed with many talented players over those years which has made my job easy. I try to promote the game of tennis, make playing high school tennis fun, and be a positive influence on the lives of my players.”
