Riders Hoping to Turn Corner

By JOSH STROPE

WEIRTON — Last season was about learning how to practice, how to compete and how to approach the game. This year, Weir softball coach Frank Sisinni is hoping his Red Riders are ready to turn the corner.

The Red Riders will be young — eight of their 12 players are underclassmen — but they are also returning eight letterwinners.

“This is the year we are hoping to start winning,” Sisinni said. “It is is a situation where we are young, but also experienced.”

The lone senior will third baseman Mariah Stevens, who will also see some time as pitcher.

Sophomore Alivia Rosnick was an All-Valley selection and struck out 80 as a freshman. She was also solid at the plate, hitting .325.

Junior Allison Phillips (shortstop) and sophomore Maddie Dillulo (second) will man the middle of the infield.

Patrolling the outfield with be juniors Lexey Brenneman (left), Abriana Fuscardo (center) and sophomore Elizabeth Davis (right).

Sisinni is excited about two freshmen that will crack the starting lineup. Sophia Mikula will be at catcher with Taylor Webster manning first base.

Others that will see playing time are sophomores Samantha Kaczmarek (P/1B/OF) and Katelyn McCallister (OF) and freshman Sarah Bodrog (3B/OF)

“We are coming off a 4-22 season, but 11 games we lost by three runs or less,” Sisinni said. “Pitching is going to be a strength for us this year.

“Our hitting needs to develop and that is something we stressed i the offseason. One of our goals is to cross the plate more.”
