Driving Away the Addiction Crisis

2 min read

To those in West Virginia who have shaken their heads about the substance abuse epidemic and shrugged -- because what can one person do? --the Jobs and Hope West Virginia Program has some answers.

One new campaign, Get Paid to Pay it Forward, will compensate drivers for transporting individuals to substance use treatment. Transportation and accessibility are insurmountable challenges for some in the Mountain State, though addiction has found its way into every crevice.

"The drug epidemic is a real problem that could have brought this entire state to our knees economically and socially," Gov. Jim Justice said.

"But Jobs and Hope WV is doing an amazing job and really saving lives. This is tough stuff, and we need more help, but it's worth it. The people of West Virginia are worth it."

Anyone can sign up as a driver, and the program encourages individuals in recovery to apply as contract workers through Modivcare. These drivers will be paid per mile and can choose the assignments they accept -- single trips or recurring rides.

Go to HELP4WV.com or contact wv.idprocess@modivcare.com for more information.

Meanwhile there is also an opportunity for individuals to donate vehicles to Good News Mountaineer Garage, from which they can be supplied to those in need. There is plenty to learn at goodnewsmountaineergarage.org/jobs-hope-program.

Those are just a couple of the ways an individual can make a difference for those struggling to overcome the many challenges faced in our state. Individuals who decide to help may be the key.

Consider whether the road to recovery might start with you.
