Wheeling Native’s Drawings Going On Display at WJU

The Wheeling Jesuit University Fine Arts Department will host an exhibition featuring the works of Wheeling artist, Sophia Kayafas, this fall.
"Certainly Uncertainty" is a collection of Kayafas' recent drawings. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 6 in the WJU Art Gallery located in Kirby Hall. The artist will give a talk on her works from 3-4 p.m. Oct. 7. Both events are free and open to the public.
Kayafas, 24, a recent graduate of the New York Academy of Art, uses irrationality from her spiritual life to fuel absurd imagery and release anxieties with both humor and meaningful storytelling of a grand and theatrical nature. Religious experience, culture and upbringing have deeply influenced her view of the world and understanding of visual art. Her Orthodox Christian faith, Greek-American heritage and liberal-mindedness supply her with an array of contradictions to work from.
Georgia Tambasis, WJU assistant professor of art and gallery director, said, "The exhibit explores the limits of realism and abstraction as Kayafas' work balances an intangible world with a harsh physical, relatable reality. Bizarre vanishing points, multiple perspectives, bouncing light, exaggeration of the figures, and the transformation of space inhabit her drawings."
The exhibit will run through Dec. 1. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.
