MOUNDSVILLE -- The Marshall County Board of Education met in special session Friday evening to accept the resignation of Jeffrey Crook, who was hired as superintendent in 2017.

Crook, who had moved to the area from his home in Hampshire County, was given a positive evaluation at the Jan. 22 board meeting, though the board decided at that same meeting in a 4-1 decision not to renew his contract at the end of his term in June.

No reason for the decision was given. That remained true through the conclusion of Friday's special meeting.

Crook was not present for the special session, and his chair remained empty as board President John Miller called for a vote to accept his resignation. The motion was approved unanimously without comment or statement from Crook or the board.

The board then retreated behind closed doors for 45 minutes to discuss the appointment of an interim superintendent to serve the district through June 30.

The board returned and nominated Stanley Stewart, a longtime employee of Marshall County Schools who had since retired.

"He's dedicated his life to public service, and a large part of that was with Marshall County Schools," Miller said of Stewart.
