Hundred Baseball Returns 10 Lettermen for 2019 Season

By Bubba Kapral 3 min read

HUNDRED -- Coach Ron Dennis took over a Hundred baseball program that was steeped in losing with no home field. He enters Year 2 at the Hornets' helm with a much brighter outlook.

"I took over a program last year that had not won a game in five years. Our theme was a 'New Beginning,'" Dennis said. "The players bought into what I wanted to accomplish and we worked very hard on fundamentals.

"With a terrible spring and not having a home field we struggled to play 13 games. We won two games to break the streak. This year looks promising with 10 returning lettermen. We lost only one senior in Zac Zedell."

Hundred has a 14-player roster, featuring three seniors. They are Brandon Rine, pitcher and third base; Travis McCoy, catcher and first base and Jacob Allen, outfield. All three are letterwinners.

Four junior lettermen are back in the fold -- Logan Norris, infielder; Hunter Tustin, first base; Marlin Hippensteel, outfield; and Bryce Bartrug, outfield. The quartet will all see mound duty.

Gauge Boston and Bobby Hostutler, both lettermen, head a three-player sophomore class. Boston is an outfielder and pitcher while Hostutler is an infielder and hurler. Classmate Dylan Walton will be utilized as a pitcher, catcher, outfielder and first baseman.

Three freshmen round out the Hundred roster. Chris Rine is an infielder-outfielder; Isaac Price is a catcher and infielder while Christian Fluharty will be utilized as a pitcher, infielder and outfielder.

"This year's emphasis is on developing our pitching staff and defense. Early on in practice we are looking better than at any point last year," Dennis said.

"It is our expectation to enter every game with a chance to win.

"One of our goals is to make the OVAC Tournament and we also want compete competitively in our section.

"It is also our hope to have a home field by our first home game scheduled for April 3."

The Hornets' home field was washed away by massive flooding a year ago. Dennis is being assisted by Terry Ritter and Chris Fluharty.
