Some Wheeling residents are not satisfied with the state Division of Highways system of detours around the Interstate 70 construction zone, DOH officials learned at a public meeting on Wednesday.
Much of the concern seems to focus on tractor-trailer rigs traveling over Wheeling Hill, then down through North Wheeling to get back on I-70. Having watched some of the big rigs negotiate that route, we can understand the complaints.
DOH officials, working with the city of Wheeling, should determine whether a better approach can be found. One improvement could be doing more to ensure westbound trucks passing through the city use I-470 instead of staying on I-70 and having to use the city-streets detour.
Another change, suggested Wednesday, would send detoured traffic through the downtown business district instead of down the steep hill with sharp turns into North Wheeling. That, too, ought to be considered.
There is no perfect answer to the challenge, of course. Still, DOH officials ought to investigate whether improvements can be made.
