John Arbenz Hazlett, 86, formerly of Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. He was born March 21, 1940, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Susan (Arbenz) Hazlett and Robert C. Hazlett, Sr. John was a proud resident of Wheeling for most of his 86 years. He attended Linsly Military Institute, graduating in 1958, before earning his undergraduate degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1962. Haswells’ Gift Helps YMCA Continue Its Evolution

Jason Haswell’s love for his late wife has created a wonderful new asset for every child served by the Wheeling YMCA. The Y recently announced a $100,000 donation to create the Haswell Family Technology and Learning Center at the newly renovated building in Elm Grove. Congratulations, Stifel Award Winners

The photos started appearing on social media over the past couple of weeks, students from multiple grades in Ohio County Schools displaying the certificate showing they were among this year’s George E. Stifel Award winners. The award was the brainchild of Stifel, a successful department store owner and a member of the inaugural class of the Wheeling Hall of Fame.
