Society Plans Day Trip to Cass Scenic Railroad Aug. 17
BELLAIRE — The Great Stone Viaduct Historical Society is planning a day trip to the Cass Scenic Railroad on Aug. 17.
The trip will depart Bellaire from in front of Frizzi Law Offices, 224 32nd St., and travel by chartered bus to Elkins, West Virginia, where the group will board the train. This trip will include two train rides in one day.
The group will spend nearly eight hours split between two trains. The rail journey begins when the group departs the Elkins depot at 9:30 a.m. The first leg of the trip will be in vintage passenger cars pulled by two Western Maryland diesel engines towards the abandoned town of Old Spruce, W.Va., along the Cheat River. Lunch will be served on the train as it travel towards Old Spruce. Lunch is included in the ticket cost.
The second part of the adventure starts when the group transfers trains at Old Spruce and continues the journey up the mountain to the second highest point in West Virginia, Bald Knob. This train will feature open air cars powered by two Shay steam logging locomotives.
The grades on this rail line can approach 6 percent and the engines put on quite a show getting the riders to the top of the mountain. Once at Bald Knob, the group will depart the train and enjoy scenery from an observation deck that features views into several states on a clear day.
The group will arrive at the Cass depot at about 4:45 p.m. and guests can enjoy the more than 100-year-old general store before the departure for home.
Guests may bring a small personal sized cooler with them as well. GSV will have cold water available on the bus at no charge.
This trip will depart Bellaire at 5:15 a.m. by chartered bus. The group will depart Cass at 6 p.m. for home and arrive back in Bellaire by 11 p.m. The group will be making a stop for dinner on the way home. All dinner costs and souvenirs are the responsibility of each person on the trip.
Each person attending is responsible to supply their own devices to assist them during this tour, as well as any person they need for their assistance. GSV is not responsible to provide these devices or assistance; let them know of any issues when making your reservation.
