OV Civil War Roundtable to Host Symposium Aug. 17
WHEELING — The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will hold its annual Civil War Symposium at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at West Virginia Independence Hall in downtown Wheeling.
The symposium will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Mattox who passed away last month. The first speaker will be author of “Battlefield Guide,”Professor Rea Redd who will discuss the testing and stages to become a battlefield guide and a guide’s points of views about Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harpers Ferry.
A 45-minute break for lunch and an opportunity to tour WVIH follows. At 12:15 p.m., Judge Harry White will discuss the presidential powers and role of the Supreme Court in time of war.
Following White will be author Scott Mingus who will lecture on the role of West Virginia troops at the Second Battle of Winchester during the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. The symposium is scheduled to end at 2:30 p.m. The symposium is supported by Debbie Jones, curator of WVIH; the Wheeling 250 Committee; Friends of Wheeling; Wheeling Heritage Foundation; and the West Virginia Humanities Council.
