Priebe Masters Many Talents
Editor’s Note: Each month, Artworks Around Town will tell us about its member artists. This week will feature artist Bobbi Priebe.
WHEELING — Artworks Around Town’s Artist of the month for February is Bobbi Priebe. A member of the gallery for years, she has been an involved and active participant in all its aspects from keeping her work fresh to working on events sponsored by Artworks. She chaired last year’s Journees de Painture event in Wheeling. Plein air artists came from several countries in Europe to paint local scenes and display and sell their works.
Priebe was interested in an early age in art and making pretty things. When she was 6 years old, her grandmother taught her how to crochet, knit and embroider and by 6, she had sewed her first dress. In high school, she took oil painting lessons but realizing that artists have trouble supporting themselves, she majored in psychology when in college, in her words “not a much better pursuit for a money-making career than art.”
After the birth of her fourth and last child, she went on to earn an R.N. degree as well as a Master of Education degree. It was then that she gave in to her creative instincts and returned to art. She now teaches art at St. John Central Academy in Bellaire.
Just like the artist herself, Priebe’s paintings light up a room. She uses vivid colors and detail to highlight her scenes and make them come to life. She has painted realistic, intricate streetscapes as well as more fanciful flights of imagination. Priebe has won awards for her art at Crosscurrents, The Steubenville Art Association and Wheeling Jesuit University. She sells original paintings as well as prints and note cards.
