Escape Is as Close As Your Bookshelf
I don’t know about you, but my idea of a great vacation is to have the time to start and finish reading a couple of books that have been gathering dust on my bookshelf.
These past few weeks have been anything but a vacation, however I found that making time for things that make me happy have helped with the stay-at-home guidelines. Next to reading a daily newspaper, books are some of the best friends a family could have.
Books offer opportunities to take virtual adventures in a way that encourages us to use our imaginations. Writers can tease us with their literary descriptions of a place or person. It’s our own minds that bring those things to life.
If you’re like me, you have a book on tables in various rooms of the house with the vow to finish each of them “someday.” Well, someday is now.
What better time to rediscover those authors that have made you smile, forced you to sleep with the lights on or left you wondering why a story would end with a mystery.
It’s easy to get hooked on a series or a specific writer that never disappoints. Authors Stephen King and Ray Bradbury have caused me a few sleepless nights. Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts have provided drama and romance while John Grisham and James Patterson have plied me with suspenseful page-turners.
Remember those series of books you read when you were a child — say Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys or more recently, Harry Potter? These books have never gone out of style. Maybe it’s time to introduce them to another generation of readers.
The “Goosebumps” series of books was popular for the pre-teen set years ago and still are sought after reading.
The key to keeping kids reading is to find what they enjoy and provide them with the appropriate books. Even comic books offer an engaging reading experience filled with super heroes and modern-day damsels in distress.
Local libraries may reopen in the near future. Until then, you can visit them online and find a world of distraction – maybe even a vacation — among the books they offer.
