WHEELING — Good Shepherd Nursing Home has earned a five-star rating from the U.S. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services for all or part of each year of the 13-year history of the CMS rating program. This is an extraordinary achievement for Good Shepherd, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The Wheeling long-term care facility recently learned that it is one of only two nursing homes in the state of West Virginia that received the top five-star rating in every category evaluated by the federal government. The other facility is in Charleston.

Good Shepherd received a perfect five stars in Health Inspections, Quality Measures and Staffing, and a five-star overall score. CMS assigns ratings ranging from one to five stars for each category, with more stars indicating higher quality.

The announcement was made at the start of national Nursing Home Week, a time established by the American Health Care Association to recognize the essential role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for senior citizens.

Administrator Donald R. Kirsch, who has led Good Shepherd for the past 39 years, said the credit for the unprecedented success belongs to Good Shepherd’s staff. “To achieve this level of consistent excellence is a testament to the hard-working women and men of our staff,” he said. “It gives me great pleasure to see our staff so honored for their hard work and dedicated service to our residents.”

He also recognized the leadership of the Good Shepherd Board of Directors. “Our board is unified in its commitment to excellence,” he said.

These days Good Shepherd continues to accept residents that are referred by hospitals. It will begin accepting self-referred residents once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
