WHEELING — The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra is gearing up for the beloved holiday tradition Symphony on Ice, a musical figure skating extravaganza that combines orchestral music, local school choirs, area skate clubs, professional figure skaters and more.
Scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at WesBanco Arena, Symphony on Ice will feature holiday music alongside choreographed figure skating numbers.
Symphony on Ice is presented by Main Street Bank and EQT Foundation, with additional support from Paul Tucker, Ben and Lynne Exley, Belmont Savings Bank, Kyle and Nina Rosenthal, the Encova Foundation and the Spadafore Family.
“I am so excited to return to WesBanco Arena for Symphony on Ice,” WSO Music Director John Devlin said. “As the WSO’s holiday tradition, it is such a joy to come together with so many different organizations in our community to create an event that people enjoy returning to year after year. Whether I’m working with students from area middle and high schools or watching the figure skaters practice their routines, I am always blown away by the talent and the joy that each group brings to the event.”
Symphony on Ice will feature the Wheeling Skate Club and the Pittsburgh Skate Club, as well as champion ice dancers Cara Murphy and Josh Levitt. This year, Symphony on Ice will welcome Olympic medalist Karen Chen, who won silver in the figure skating team event at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
Each year, the WSO also partners with local middle and high school choirs to create a special holiday choir of more than 300 students. This year, nine school choirs from the Ohio Valley will participate, creating what the WSO anticipates will be one of the largest holiday choirs yet. Symphony on Ice will also feature local singer Chelsey Keding on several numbers. Born and raised in Wheeling, Keding has performed all over the world, including on stage at Carnegie Hall and on popular television programs Live with Kelly and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
In addition to what happens on the ice, concertgoers will be awed as soon as they walk in the WesBanco Arena lobby by magical stilt walkers, local handbell choirs and more.
“Symphony on Ice is a true family-friendly event,” Sonja Thoms, WSO executive director, said. “Between the mesmerizing figure skating and beloved holiday music you can’t help but sing along to, I guarantee Symphony on Ice is a concert the whole family will enjoy. We are so grateful to Main Street Bank and the EQT Foundation for their commitment to supporting outstanding holiday programming for ages 1 to 92.”
Student tickets and group rates are available. Tickets for Symphony on Ice can be purchased online at wheelingsymphony.com or by calling the Wheeling Symphony Box Office at 304-232-6191.
