Unheard-of-History Storytelling at Moundsville Library

Judi Tarowsky

MOUNDSVILLE – “When Sisters Were Soldiers” will be presented by storyteller Judi Tarowsky at noon on Thursday, April 23, at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

This performance is free, open to the public and aimed at adults and students. It will take place on the library’s main floor.

In this Unheard-of-History program, Tarowsky shares a little-known but fascinating narrative from the local region. Six Sisters of Saint Joseph operated Wheeling Hospital during the Civil War. When the Federal Government took over the hospital, the sisters were declared members of the Union Army. Their story offers a look into life during that tumultuous time in our history.

Tarowsky, a local writer, editor and educator with a special interest in history, has been a professional storyteller for over a decade. She has been president of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and also a member of the Ohio Organization for the Preservation of Storytelling. She has performed at numerous venues including the Grand Vue Park Storytelling Festival, The Three Rivers Storytelling Festival, the Arthurdale Heritage Site and the Cockayne Farmstead, as well as libraries and museums. Her repertoire includes historic programs, Appalachian tales, ghost stories and hilarious tall tales. The common thread is that her storytelling is captivating, heart-felt and well-researched.

The Moundsville Library is located at Fifth Street and Tomlinson Avenue in Moundsville. This event is sponsored by the R. Mike Baker Family.
