Speaker to Discuss PTSD and the Civil War Soldier
WHEELING – On Wednesday, May 27, Jeanne Cox will be the guest speaker at the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable meeting.
As a retired nurse practitioner, Cox’s interest in Civil War history and the medical treatment of Civil War soldiers began more than 20 years ago. The focus of her recent research is the physical and mental wounds suffered by Civil War veterans’ battle experiences. During the 1860s, medical officials’ evaluations of soldiers did not acknowledge mental illness issues as battle wounds. Her research explores the evidence that post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD can be traced back to the Civil War era.
Cox, of Chester, W.Va., is a member of several Civil War Roundtables and lectures frequently to numerous historical and civic organizations throughout West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The Roundtable meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. inside the Ohio County Public Library’s auditorium. Cox’s presentation is open to the public.
