WHEELING - Artworks will feature Sharon Hanse's solo calligraphy exhibit for the month of July.
A reception will begin the show at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 10. The party is free, and all are invited to attend to celebrate Hanse and her work.
The study of art has been a lifelong quest for this artist, whose works have been collected and treasured by many over the years. After high school, Hanse studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Community College. She learned drawing, painting, design and layout skills.
In 1978, she became a serious student of calligraphy. Studying with some of the most accomplished artists in the world helped her to perfect the art form that would become her passion.
During these years, she learned illumination, gilding, book making, paper making, collage as well as printmaking and silkscreening. All of these influences can be seen in her pieces. She uses watercolors, pastels, collage, embossing, papers she has made and marbled, block printing and paper cutting.
Every work has a message, using quotes from literature, Hanse chooses words that motivate, uplift, comfort and inspire.
"She strives to create works of art that will attract the viewers attention and draw them close enough to read the text," her artist’s biography states.
