WHEELING -- Honeybees may be small, but their impact on our environment is enormous.
Oglebay Institute's Schrader Environmental Education Center invites families, nature lovers, gardeners and aspiring beekeepers to celebrate these remarkable pollinators during National Honeybee Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. The free event is open to all ages and offers a fun and engaging opportunity to learn about the important role honeybees play in our ecosystem.
Throughout the day, guests can enjoy a variety of hands-on activities and educational experiences designed to deepen their understanding of honeybees and pollinator conservation. Activities include honeybee crafts, games, honey taste testing, bee anatomy demonstrations, and exhibits highlighting products created from beehives and the many ways bees benefit people and the environment.
"National Honeybee Day is a wonderful opportunity to connect people with nature and inspire appreciation for one of our most important pollinators," said Melissa Knollinger, director of Marketing and Communications at Oglebay Institute. "Whether you’re interested in beekeeping, gardening, conservation, or simply looking for a fun family activity, this event offers a chance to learn how each of us can help support healthy pollinator populations in our own communities."
One of the event’s most popular attractions will be guided tours of a live beehive. Visitors will get an up-close view of honeybees at work and learn how colonies function, communicate and contribute to the environment. Tours are scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. and are limited to five participants per session. Reservations are encouraged by calling the Schrader Center at 304-242-6855. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Honeybees are responsible for pollinating many of the fruits, vegetables and flowering plants that sustain both wildlife and people. National Honeybee Day serves as a reminder of the vital role pollinators play and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on.
Located in Oglebay Park, the Schrader Environmental Education Center provides year-round opportunities for people of all ages to explore and connect with the natural world. National Honeybee Day reflects the Center’s ongoing commitment to environmental education and conservation through engaging, hands-on experiences.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information visit oionline.com or to reserve a spot for a live beehive tour, call 304-242-6855.
