Woman’s Club of Wheeling Welcomes New and Prospective Members
WHEELING - The Woman's Club of Wheeling welcomes women of the Ohio Valley as guests to attend the annual Membership Tea at noon on Friday, Sept. 18, at the Osiris Shrine Temple, Monument Place in Elm Grove.
There is no charge to attend, but reservations must be made by Monday, Sept. 7, by calling Lexie Hanket, membership chairman at 304-845-0078.
President Linda Snodgrass encourages those interested to consider this event as a "Meet and Greet" opportunity to find out about what the club actually does. The event is held to welcome back our current members and guests and to initiate the new members: Manetta Calinger, Wendy Gordon, Lynne Moyle, Tracy Robson, Christy Sambuco, Tisha Schunn and Kris Yost. The event is hosted by the Hospitality Committee of 20 members who prepare the sandwiches, desserts, fruit, tea and coffee.
If interested in joining before then in order to be initiated at that time, please contact Hanket to get the information.
The yearly membership fee is $50. Meetings are held on Fridays at 1 p.m. twice a month October to December and February to April. Other special events include fundraising style shows, a Christmas luncheon, and a spring luncheon. After the general meetings, entertaining programs of speakers, singers, pianists and musical groups are provided for the members to enjoy.
The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is a unifying force, bringing together local women's clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. With nearly 80,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encourage civic engagement and working toward peace and understanding.
The Woman's Club of Wheeling was organized and admitted to the West Virginia State Federation in 1911 and to the General Federation of Women's Club in 1913. The club currently has 118 members who are part of GFWC Federation of over 80,000 members.
Members are volunteers who help transform lives every day not simply with monetary donations but with hands-on tangible projects that provide immediate impact to those in the local communities. Members hope to reach out to accomplish their mission of volunteering and to share time together to support the needs of the community and people in need.
Becoming a member means joining a club where thousands of women are members throughout the world, gaining fellowship and a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in helping others, contributing to the quality of life in your community, participating in interesting, informative and inspiring programs, and volunteering your time to support worthy agencies. Come and develop new friendships that can last a lifetime.
Through fundraising efforts, generous member donations and membership dues, the club donates to many local community and GFWC affiliate organizations: Operation Smile, Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center, Salvation Army, Easter Seals, The Wheeling Soup Kitchen, Relay for Life, March of Dimes, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Shot @ Life, Make A Wish Foundation, Augusta Levy, and more. Club members advocate for veterans and for women and children with emphasis on Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention. Committee members work together to help those in need.
Those interested in becoming members are urged to come and join the others to be a part of the organization.
