WHEELING - The speakers at the Tuesday, Oct. 13, meeting of the Ohio County Master Gardeners will be Milt Gutman, a local farmer and baker. The meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. at Vance Memorial Church, 905 National Road.
Gutman is a hobby farmer in Ohio County and will be reflecting on nearly two decades of experience developing his farm, the successes and the failures. What began as 24 acres and a dream has developed into a wonderful pastime since. Although recently retired from being a full-time vendor at the Wheeling Farmers' Market, the talk will detail the journey from a 30' x 30' garden and the first farmers' market with 12 loaves of bread to an acre of garden and orchard, offering seasonal produce as well as a variety of baked goods.
He traces the joy he finds in the garden to his maternal grandfather, William Rempe, who had an amazing gift for raising plants from seeds and creating amazing gardens.
Milt graduated from Linsly Military Institute and West Liberty State College, joining the family advertising agency a few hours a day during his junior year in high school in 1972, becoming full time in 1979 and president in 1993. He recently retired in the agency's 100th year of operation.
In addition to his love of gardening and baking, he also enjoys grandparenting, construction and woodworking, camping, kayaking, hiking and spending time in the West Virginia State Parks.
