5 min read

WHEELING - The Woman's Club of Wheeling will be meeting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, and Friday, Nov. 20, at Monument Place in Wheeling with President Linda Snodgrass presiding.

If interested in attending a meeting or joining, contact Lexie Hanket, membership chairwoman, at 304-845-0078. A $5 charge is requested for non-members to attend which can be paid at the door. Lunch is served at noon by a local vendor.

Membership is open throughout the year with a yearly membership fee of $50. Nine new members joined in September, and currently there are 121 members in the club.

Fifteen members attended the GFWC WV Northern District Fall Convention on Oct. 10 along with members from four other northern district clubs. President Jeanne Amidon presided and welcomed speaker GFWC WV State President Terri Diamond.

The Arts and Crafts Competition was held there with 16 entries winning first place certificates by the Woman's Club of Wheeling members. Barb LaRue, fundraising chairwoman, wished to thank the club members and the many guests from the community who supported the Fall Style Show Luncheon on Oct. 30. The proceeds from this event will be used to donate to several local community agencies that are supported every year.

During the month of November, committee members will be participating in a variety of activities to support our community. At the Nov. 6 meeting, the Civic Engagement and Outreach Committee will be holding an annual White Elephant Sale with the proceeds to benefit the Operation Smile initiative. In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the committee will prepare and deliver treat bags to veterans at Elmhurst and Welty in Wheeling. The Education and Libraries Committee will be awarding a $500 scholarship to a local student, and the winner will be announced in November.

The Child Welfare Committee donated 400 decorated Christmas bags for the Salvation Army Christmas Project for children. The Environment Committee is promoting "America Recycles Day" on Nov. 15 encouraging members to recycle and repurpose as a major theme. The Health and Wellness Committee is focused on exercise and good eating habits for members. The Arts and Culture Committee is involved in the GFWC WV State President's Special Project called "I Love Music." This is a statewide initiative to support the arts by investing in the next generation of musicians and creators by supporting music education for our students.

After the 1 p.m. general meeting on Nov. 6, the New Age Adenas, a local band, will perform.

Bringing a unique blend of originals and creative covers, New Age Adenas delivers an eclectic sound you won't hear anywhere else. The band's name is inspired by the ancient Adena culture, known for their deep regional impact, artistry, and tradition -- a fitting influence for a group grounded in creativity and storytelling. The band includes Mary Blake on vocals, guitar and hand percussion; Eric Wellman on guitar and vocals; and Greg Pawlack on mandolin and fiddle.

On Friday, Nov. 20, Judy Szymialis will present a book review at 11 a.m. before the general meeting.

After the Nov. 20 general meeting, the program will feature Miss West Virginia Elizabeth Romanek, a Wheeling native, who will speak to our members about her journey representing our state. MBA student, college recruiter, two-time National Dance Alliance Collegiate Champion, and WV Physical Activity Plan Ambassador, Romanek recently added Miss West Virginia 2026 to her list of accomplishments. First up on her agenda is to motivate, optimize, vitalize and energize all of West Virginians to move in ways that best suit them through her community service initiative M.O.V.E. This is particularly significant in West Virginia.

A Summa Cum Laude West Virginia University graduate, Romanek earned a degree in marketing to connect with people and engage in creative communication. She is now pursuing a master of business administration and serving as the assistant director of admission and recruitment events at Bethany College, guiding young people in their pursuit of higher education. She represented the Mountain State in the Miss America Competition in September.

A Holiday Christmas Luncheon will be held at noon on Thursday, Dec. 10, at Monument Place. This event is open to the public, and the deadline for reservations is Nov. 30. The cost for a ticket is $30. Contact Lexie Hanket, Hospitality Committee Chairwoman, at 304-845-0078.

The Civic Engagement and Outreach Committee will sponsor a major fundraising bake sale of holiday goodies with proceeds to Operation Smile. The lunch menu is yet to be determined. An entertaining performance by Twice As Nice will be featured after lunch. We welcome members and guests to attend and enjoy the festivities of entertainment, good food, laughter and fellowship.

The Woman's Club of Wheeling acknowledges and honors military veterans who have served and are serving on behalf of our country. The club extends gratitude and thanks to our veterans for their service and sacrifice over the years.
