WHEELING -- United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley is preparing to host Oktoberfest on the Plaza from 3-10 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 24.
Oktoberfest is located at the Plaza on Market in downtown Wheeling and will feature traditional and German-themed food, beer and music. Polka music begins at 3 p.m. and will be followed by the local band, Zane Run. Pittsburgh favorite, JukeBox, will close out the event. The festival will also have games and crafts for kids from 3-5 p.m.
The United Way kicks off their campaign in September in a big way with special events including Reverse Raffle and the Sandy O'Haver Day of Caring that happened earlier this month. This year the campaign theme is "Raised Here. Stays Here," to enforce that money raised by the United Way stays in the upper Ohio Valley.
"If you live here, you want your money to stay in this community. United Way donors can be sure their donation stays local," said United Way executive director, Jessica Rine. "Events like Oktoberfest bring our local community together to raise money for our neighbors."
The Oktoberfest beer garden will be staffed with United Way volunteers, and food trucks will be available. Rine encourages attendees to check out local businesses and restaurants while downtown. Local restaurant, the Bridge Tavern & Grill, is featuring authentic German style food right around the corner from the event.
General admission is free, and age appropriate guests may purchase a $2 wristband with proper ID if they wish to drink from the wide selection of craft and domestic beers. Wine will also be available for purchase.
For $12, festival goers receive a drink wristband, commemorative Oktoberfest stein and a drink ticket. More information can be found on the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Facebook page and at UnitedWayUOV.org.
Oktoberfest on the Plaza is in partnership with the city of Wheeling and sponsored by Orrick and the Ohio County Commission. United Way Annual Sponsors support all special events in 2022: Williams, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal, WVU Medicine -- Wheeling Hospital, Comcast, LevelTek, Belmont Savings Bank, The Health Plan, Ziegenfelder, MPLX and Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration.
