Panel at Library’s Next Lunch With Books to Discuss 1971 Clash, Tragedy in Wheeling

WHEELING — The Ohio County Public Library’s next Lunch With Books program will include a panel discussion about an historic yet tragic event in the city’s history for a presentation titled “Disturbance at Chapline Street.”

The program will take place at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the library downtown.

In January, 1971, a clash occurred between police in riot gear and numerous young African American people on Chapline Street near 11th Street in Wheeling. Several people were arrested.

A few days later, one of those taken into police custody, a young man named Bobby Wade, was dead by suicide. What really happened that cold winter night? Why did Wade — a young man with a bright future — take his own life?

Ron Scott Jr., director of Cultural Diversity and Community Outreach at YWCA Wheeling, will host a panel discussion of this important but unexplored history, featuring eyewitnesses like George Lee and Marlene Sinclair Midget.

Starting at $2.99/week.
