WHEELING — Acclaimed songwriting great. Singer. Musician. Novelist. Radio show host. Producer. Actor. Even a self-proclaimed social activist. That’s a lot for one man to accomplish. But Steve Earle has been able to accomplish all that in his 70 years.

Steve Earle? Do we know that name?

Well, maybe you know him as the writer/singer/musician of the song “Copperhead Road,” a 1980s anthem to the difficulties of Vietnam veterans returning to American life. It was named an official state song of Tennessee in 2023.

Or maybe you know him from his role on HBO’s series “The Wire.” Perhaps you know the name from “Coal Country,” a documentary play on the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster in Montcoal, Raleigh County, West Virginia in 2010; he wrote music for it and appeared in it.

Earle will bring his Fifty Years of Songs and Stories tour, an acoustic journey across America, along with special guest Max Gomez to the Capitol Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, in Wheeling.

During the show Earle will perform “a more or less chronological live songbook (that) might make for an interesting evening of music.”

“I’ll play a lot of guitar and some mandolin and some octave mandolin,” he said. “There’s a 12-string guitar involved too. It’s just some acoustic instruments and a lot of stories and some chronology to it. It’s about me, but I try to connect it to my relationship with audiences over the years. And I try to say thank you in the process. Most of the songs people want to hear they’re going to hear.”
